The Interior Castle (Volume Two, The Collected Works of St. Teresa of Avila) ICS Publications

The Spiritual Canticle (The Collected Works of St. John of the Cross) ICS Publications

Both of these works describe the spiritual journey of the soul from the beginning stages to divine transformation, with spiritual experiences that might be encountered. The basic spiritual path is the same, but the experiences along the way will be different for each unique individual.

What is discovered in prayerfully reading these accounts is that, through faithful commitment, the end result of divine transformation is possible for every soul. Unusual mystical experiences are not required for union with God. Through commitment of will God's sanctifying activity in the soul can continue, whether or not the soul is aware of it.

Through openness of will much more is absorbed than what is immediately realized. These divine insights become available to human intellect, from time to time, as the faculties are gradually purified. Complete access to divine wisdom will come with transformation/spiritual marriage. Faculties are then perfected and capable of fully understanding divine truths -- "putting on the mind of Christ."

For each reading assignment, reflect prayerfully upon material and highlight meaningful passages, letting your own spirit guide from within.
